Where to Find Vintage Baseball Gloves for Sale Cheap

An Appreciation for Vintage Baseball Memorabilia

I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find much when I started researching vintage baseball gloves.  I lucked out by finding some videos (I included a couple at the bottom of this post) and websites that were filled with information. Not every old glove is worth a lot of money, but some certainly are.  The thing is, people don't just collect old baseball gloves to make money.  These old gloves are a legitimate collectible tied to one of America's most treasured institutions... baseball.

Vintage baseball gloves always looked a little bit goofy to me.  I was brought up with the type of glove you see today, with big, deep pocket and lots of leather.   After doing a little bit of research though, I have come to the conclusion that these old baseball gloves are some of the best collectibles for showing just how much the game has changed over the years.

Watching those old newsreel clips of professional baseball players wearing baseball gloves that actually looked like "gloves" always made me wonder how the heck they ever caught the ball when it came at them.  It seems to me that it would have had to have been a lot tougher to make some of the fielding plays that look routine today if you were using one of those smaller models without several inches of leather making you reach that much longer.  The amazing thing is, the players in those long ago games, still DID manage to make amazing plays.  I'd love to see Major League Baseball decide to have an All Star game in which players had to use vintage equipment.  I have no idea how it would turn out, but if nothing else, I'd really like to hear the players' comparisons of the old and new equipment.

As you can see, there are a lot of low priced baseball gloves being sold on eBay, but obviously the more valuable ones might draw enough interest for their prices to skyrocket.  You can find these old glove selling for cheap prices though if you are willing to do a little bit of leg work.  You see, not a lot of folks realize that vintage gloves are collectible.  Collectors shouldn't be offended by that.  Your average person has no idea what the collectible market actually looks like.  Surprisingly, even people who run estate sales often have no clue about certain items (and vintage baseball gloves fall into this category).  When you visit estate sales, garage sales, yard sales, flea markets, or rummage sales, specifically ask if their are any old baseball gloves around.  Many times, the people having the sale will be surprised that someone is looking for such a thing.  Good News!  That usually means that they won't ask much for them if they have them.

I've come across a few old gloves in my estate sale adventures.  Unfortunately, I didn't know a whole lot about them.  Since I still have some old baseball gloves sitting here that I need to get listed, I thought I'd do a little research on them.  I found out that there are some serious fans and collectors of these old beauties out there.  I actually found a very cool vintage baseball glove forum devoted just to vintage baseball gloves that had more information than I could reasonably digest in one or even a few sittings.  If you are a collector, I'd definitely recommend checking them out.  You seriously could read the posts there for weeks and still not be done.

Some of the vintage gloves that sell today go for quite a bit.  The most expensive one I found on eBay recently went for over a thousand dollars.  If you look at the eBay listings above, you'll see some of the least expensive gloves currently listed, but you can use the drop downs to sort them however you like.  Honestly, what I came away from after visiting the vintage baseball glove forum that I mentioned, was an understanding that people have a lot of reasons to collect.  Some people look for specific brands or styles of gloves, some build collections around teams, the list goes on and on.  Those folks love their hobby.  I hope this post sends some new members their way (it's free).

When I list my gloves, I'm not going to do anything in the way of reconditioning them.  If you are a potential seller of almost anything "vintage" you might want to keep that tip in mind.  It often seems like a natural thing to clean something up before offering it for sale to someone, but with older items, you can end up doing a lot more harm than good.  Sometimes older relics just can't stand up to a good cleaning unless it is done by a professional who really knows what they are doing.  Especially messing with that old leather, the last thing I would want to do is destroy the potential historical and monetary value of a vintage baseball glove by using some modern cleaner on it that at best would change its appearance, and at worst might actually damage the old glove.  If you happen by when I've got one of my "estate sale gloves" up, it will probably be the one that looks kind of beat up.  As I mentioned, I personally am just trying to get through my massive piles of "stuff" but some of these guys who deal in these old gloves really give them some love and attention as they recondition them and give them new life.  One thing I learned in my research about vintage baseball gloves is that their are people looking for "parts" just like you might expect for old cars.  If you have an old glove sitting around, and you don't really want it, put it up for auction.  You might not get much for it, but you might help a collector to finish a project he or she is working on.

If you are looking for information, you will probably like these videos I found a lot!

Here is another one for you...

Vintage and antique baseball gloves are just an example of the many different and unusual collectibles you can come across when you start into eBay selling. You've got to keep your eyes open for anything that strikes you as even remotely collectible. Always do your research, and keep a list of "hot items" to look for with you when you head out shopping. You can also check back here often to get ideas. You just never know what will catch on as a collectible.
