Wachusett Lake Postcard

Among the many items I have to list are about 2000 vintage and antique postcards. These could take a while, but I figure I've got to get started. I'm listing them below what I've seen them going for on specialty postcard sites because frankly, I'm not an expert on them.

This is a very old postcard of Wachusett Lake, Massachusetts.

Cutwell Engine Burs

Second Hand Sale presents...

These Cutwell Automotive Engine Burs are a fine example of what I'm surrounded by right now. I've got so much stuff that has accumulated through buying lots of estate merchandise that I can barely keep track of it. Someone could probably really use these (even though some are missing). I, on the other hand, can't even imagine when I'd use them. These will be starting at 99 cents or less, like most of my stuff that I'm clearing out.

Update: These did sell and what surprised me is the fact that people have been coming back over and over to this particular post. I guess Cutwell Burs are some high quality items! The photo directly below is the original set of burs I had listed (which sold). I'm showing a couple of live listings for Cutwell Burs beneath it (they aren't mine) in case someone stops by looking for them. Hey, with all of the stuff I'm working my way through, I wouldn't be surprised to find some more of these hidden away!

What I think is great is the way people still love the old tools that come up on eBay. A lot of people say things like "they don't make things like they used to" and as I get older, I believe that to be true more and more.

This is a program distributed to professional teachers who attended the 1929 Fayette County Teachers' Institute. This is definitely a niche item, so we'll have to see if anyone out there is collecting old materials related to teachers and/or education. This might also interest people who collect prgrams from various events. I cannot imagine that there are many more of these circuating right now. Car Sales Second Hand

Car Sales

Second hand car sales are a wonderful way to save some money. That new car smell just isn't worth the thousands of dollars it costs to enjoy for fifteen seconds before you drive your new vehicle off of the lot and watch it depreciate in value instantly. I've had two friends ask me recently about helping them to list vehicles on eBay. I've never done it before for any car that I've owned, but it looks like a pretty simple operation.

I'll be helping them set up their own accounts for listing the cars, just because I really don't want to be the middle man for questions. I also don't want to complicate my numbers by having to keep track of who received money that went through my eBay ID. I avoid selling on consignment because my home state of Pennsylvania passed a law stating that you have to hold an aucioneer's license if you sell consigned items. I'm not interested in paying money for that priviledge at this point.

Some people prefer leasing their vehicles. I did that once, but don't currently. I found an interesting site that I wish had existed when I did have a leased vehicle. LeaseTrader.com
offers a service in which you can get rid of the lease on your current car and take over the lease on a vehicle that better suits you. This would be nice for those who don't like to commit to long term relationships with their cars or for people who find themselves with different needs (new baby?) than when they signed the original lease.

eBay Selling Blog

I'd like to use my Second Hand Sale site as a place to give more thorough descriptions and background information about what I have managed to collect over time. I also think it is important for buyers to get a feel for who they are dealing with when they buy online. Of course, I invite you to check out my feedback on eBay, but I also invite you to post any questions you might have as well.

If I had the room, I could probably set up a "vintage museum" that would be pretty interesting. I really do enjoy examining all of the old stuff I find. Of course not all of it is all that old. Some things I pick up just because I think maybe I can make a few dollars for my trouble of doing the leg work for a collector out there. But, in general, I think I find a lot of really neat old stuff.

When I first started selling on eBay, I sold only things that I already owned. Once I got bitten by the selling bug, I started buying tons of stuff without really researching things too much. As you might expect, I ended up with quite a bit of what was not much more than old junk. I ended up just giving that stuff away or discarding it if I couldn't use it myself. There was a learning curve involved, but I think I've got a much better feel now for what interests buyers on eBay while still holding my own interest.

Honestly, who wants to go out week after week, driving all over the place if you don't get some kind of enjoyment out of it? When I go to estate sales, I think I sometimes see people who this applies to. They rush through the sales, grumbling all the way about the "junk" and muttering about how there must have been a presale because they can't find what they want! Selling on eBay has never paid me well enough that I'd want to give up so much time just to be miserable while I did it. I actually enjoy "the hunt" for interesting stuff. If you ever see me at a sale, I'll be the one browsing slowly and looking closely at the old boxes that other people are rushing by to get to the "well known" collectibles. You might even see me off in the corner reading an old magazine from the 1920's. I enjoy that. I'm just weird like that I guess.

I hope you find some things you like here because as much as I enjoy finding this stuff, I just have way too much of it right now. I want my family to be able to use the game room again.

Vintage McKeesport High School Yearbook

Second Hand Sale presents...

A very nice 1945 Vintage McKeesport High School Yearbook.

One of the things I enjoy finding at estate sales is old yearbooks. Looking at them is like looking back at life during another generation's glory days. All of the young faces filled with dreams of the future! I generally could have at least one of these listed every couple of weeks. One that was set to list but didn't due to technical difficulties this past week was a really nice McKeesport High School yearbook from 1926! I'll be getting that on soon.

The value of these is quite variable. If there is a reunion coming up and two people want the same book, the value goes up, obviously. I don't really worry about that at this point since I'm trying to make space. I just list them. The value of these increases DRAMATICALLY if someone famous is included in the student listings.

Update: This yearbook along with a couple of others from McKeesport have been sold. Until I get more listed, I'm going to leave some other McKeesport items showing for anyone who might be interested. McKeesport has a great history and used to be quite a thriving economic center.

My Second Hand Sale

Hi. If you haven't read the "About My Second Hand Sale" page at the top, please do. I've always enjoyed going to garage sales, estate sales and auctions. I've found a lot of great stuff. Over the last couple of years however, I've enjoyed it a bit too much as I sold part time on eBay. I made some large purchases from estates that I probably shouldn't have without making better storage arrangements. My wife has been understanding, but I've just accumulated more than I could get listed while still working a full time job.

Anyway, my hope is that having my own blog/store will give me a bit more freedom than eBay allows for my commentary and possibly moving in different directions in the future. I plan to post often, and I hope you'll find it entertaining and mark this site as a favorite. Thanks for stopping by!

With a history dating back to the mid 1980's, American Girl Dolls have become quite popular among todays young girls and doll collectors in general. Although some people frown on what they see as the over commercialism of the product, they remain on holiday wish lists. If you are a collector of American Girls or if you have a little girl who wants to start collecting, eBay should definitely be on your "to check" list. The reason is that many times, the dolls themselves as well as their clothing and accessories get sold off in large lots by parents who want to clear out items their children have lost interest in. Vintage Sewing Notions and Buttons

I moved a box today and found a ton of vintage sewing notions and buttons. It was actually a mixed lot made up of items from at least a few different estate sale purchases. I started wondering why the heck they are called "notions"? I checked an online dictionary and found that one definition was "small lightweight items for household use, such as needles, buttons, and thread." That defines what I've got here. It seems that the word springs from the idea of "clever invention." That clears THAT up.

So anyway, if someone saw my box of sewing stuff, they'd probably think that I was pretty into the craft. Actually, I'm still getting by on what I learned in the home ec class I had to take in eighth grade, and that isn't too much. At my best I was able to produce a serviceable oven mitt in about a week. I've got a ton of this stuff that has been building up. I decided to do two separate listings. One for all the buttons and the other for the more eclectic mixed lot that includes quite a bit of thread. In the spirit of clearing the clutter, I'm once again starting the bidding at a price which will actually lose money for me. Getting my game room back is worth it to me.

Update: My lots are sold, but I am leaving a live feed up to current auctions. I always come across this stuff, so I'll most likely be popping my own stuff back in very soon. I hope you find something you like!
