Who's Your Favorite Band?

Most people go through a period when music plays a huge part in their life. One of the most popular ways of proclaiming loyalty to one particular band is to build up a collection of assorted memorabilia related to them.

One band that inspires its followers to unprecedented levels of loyalty is Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden t shirts are sought out and bought up by their fans in amazing numbers. These collectors want new Iron Maiden t shirts, but they are also often willing to spend some big bucks to get their hands on the vintage Iron Maiden concert shirts that sometimes show up on eBay. How loyal are these fans? Well, they routinely drop hundreds of dollars for the original Iron Maiden tour gear that many people have hidden away in their attics, covered with dust. Anyone who might stumble upon such a find at a yard sale or garage sale would be wise to snap it up for a fair price. They are almost guaranteed a very nice return on their investment.

Better with Age?

With a lot of collectibles, the rule is, the older, the better.  This sort of holds true for Iron Maiden fans.  Certainly owning a tour shirt from 1982 is almost like a badge of honor, but there are plenty of shirts from the later part of the 80's that also do very well.  One very cool thing about Iron Maiden's shirts is that they feature some very interesting artwork.  The band's mascot, Eddie, is found in all sorts of "interesting" situations.  There are often tie-ins to the venue where the concert was being held.  One amusing example I came across recently was a 1982 Texas tour shirt that featured Eddie preparing to swallow an armadillo whole!  They're not the Bee Gees.

Iron Maiden History

Vintage Iron Maiden concert shirts are held in high esteem by collectors.  I've sold a LOT of vintage concert  tour t shirts on eBay and I'd have to say that Iron Maiden fans are some of the most hard core when it comes to getting the shirts they want.  Iron Maiden formed in 1975 and then exploded in the U.S. in 1982.  They had a string of hit albums and I personally remember myself and many of my friends wearing those freshly minted concert t shirts back in the '80s.  In all, Iron Maiden has 36 albums to their credit, including several live albums and collections/compilations.  They helped bring English Heavy Metal to a world that was just coming out of an era filled with way too much disco.

Are Vintage T-shirts Collectible?

Concert shirts are a classic second hand sale item.  Many people even want their vintage t shirt to look like it took a beating.  I sold about 160 concert shirts last summer after I bought a couple massive collections and couldn't store them anymore.  If you have any of these floating around, you might want to consider listing them for sale.  I'm sure someone would appreciate it.  You might also want to hang on to it.  It looks like they are getting pretty collectible.

If you are looking specifically for an Iron Maiden shirt, you have a pretty good chance of finding it on eBay.  I know I'm not the only one who looks for vintage concert t-shirts when I go out shopping.  Some of the Iron maiden shirts go for some pretty high prices, but that just shows the devotion of those people buying them.

Popular Iron Maiden Shirts

Probably the most popular Iron Maiden concert tour t-shirts I've seen selling on eBay are the ones from 1982 and 1983, but pretty much anything original and vintage from the early to mid eighties does very well for sellers.

I had a pretty good collection of my own concert shirts from back in my high school days and just haven't been able to bring myself to sell them off yet.  I guess I'm hanging on to my youth through them or something.  I also thought it would be pretty funny to bust out an old Iron Maiden shirt someday when one of my daughters brings home some boy to meet her family!  Just kidding.

If you are going to buy an Iron Maiden shirt that is vintage, first of all, be sure to ask if the shirt is true vintage and not a reproduction.  Most sellers who know anything about selling vintage shirts will be sure to include a photo of the copyright date printed on the shirt (if there is one) as well as a photo of the tag on the back of the collar, if it is still there.  The tags can actually provide a big clue as to whether a shirt is an original vintage item or not.   A big name to look for is Screen Stars.  For an excellent guide to spotting authentic vintage t-shirts, check out this eBay guide.

Vintage Clothing Sizes

Another thing to remember when buying vintage clothing is that things were not "supersized" quite so much back in the eighties and earlier.  A 1980's extra large is sometimes more like what a large is today.  If the seller hasn't included actual measurements of the item, ask for them, and then compare those measurements to those of a shirt you know fits well.  There is no sense in buying the shirt if it doesn't fit unless you are planning to hang on to it as an investment, or you plan to display it.  I've sold a few of these Iron Maiden t-shirts that I did not originally own.  I may be listing some from my own collection soon.  Until then, you can check out some of the ones available now on eBay.

I mentioned this above, but it bears repeating.  If you do have old concert shirts, or any vintage t-shirt from the 70s or 80s, don't just throw it away.  Many people assume that because a shirt shows some wear, that no one will want it.  I used to think that too until I listed a Garfield t-shirt from the late 70s.  It was totally beaten up, with several small holes in the front.  I listed it for 99 cents just to see if someone would want it.  It ended up selling for $46.  Some people really like the worn look of vintage clothing, and they are happy to pay for it.

Just as an interesting note, when I was doing some research about Iron Maiden's history, I came across a very comprehensive list of information that you may find helpful if you are collecting Iron Maiden merchandise.  Even if you are not building an Iron Maiden collection, you'll probably still enjoy it.  This list describes all of the different situations that Eddie can be found in on the band's albums.  You might be surprised at how much information there is about Eddie and the band.
