I remember reading Dick Tracy in the comics when I was a boy. I wasn't really in to the continuing saga type comics, but I read it every week anyway just because the artwork always caught my eye.

I think I liked it a lot because Silly Putty worked great on it too!

Some old comic related items definitely sell better than others. There were a couple of times when I first started selling on eBay that I bought boxes full of old comics thinking that I had hit the mother load, only to check out the individual items on eBay and be disappointed. This is definitely a niche of collecting where you need to know your stuff. Dick Tracy comics and related toys and collectibles are one of the more valuable finds I've come across if for no other reason than there are more than just comic books involved here. Dick Tracy Big Little books, Dick Tracy chewing gum books, Dick Tracy Caramels cards, Dick Tracy squad cars and other assorted Dick Tracy toys like dolls and action figures have also been produced, and when they make their way out of storage and on to eBay, collectors tend to notice.

Collectors of comics and comic related memorabilia can be very particular about their investments. It makes sense though. Even the slightest flaw can significantly decrease the value of some of these items.

The Dick Tracy cartoons are part of the American culture. Whether you have ever read the comic or not, you probably know what it means when someone says, "Good job, Dick Tracy!". The name has become part of the vernacular and is now synonymous with being a detective.

Chester Gould wrote and drew the strip from 1931 all the way up until 1977. The strip was very popular but did go through some trying times as Gould experimented, sometimes unsuccessfully, with keeping Dick Tracy up with the times. Serious fans sometimes expressed their displeasure at changes they did not enjoy. Space missions, a groovy sidekick and an ill advised mustache grown by Dick Tracy are a few examples that made the natives restless.

One of the most memorable things for me from the cartoon series is the two-way wrist radio. That seems to be another item that is tied to the strip in the public's consciousness. It later became a TV, but I always think of it as a radio.

I found this Dick Tracy cartoon on YouTube, but I sort of think it lost something in the translation to animation.

Hot Wheels Lamborghini

For most people, the idea of owning a Lamborghini is just a bit outside of their budgetary retraints. I did a quick search and the cheapest one I found was in the ballpark of $220,000. That is a pretty nice ballpark. Let's face it, that costs more than the average person's house. Some people have found a way to enjoy the beautiful styling of these machines without going broke however. I'm talking about collectors of those wonderful scale model die-cast cars that many of us had when we were growing up. It seems that the Hot Wheels Lamborghini is a big seller. In particular, collectors like the 1:18 scale Lamborghini.

When I was a kid, I loved collecting Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. The thought of "seriously" collecting them never really entered my mind though. I did not realize at the time that some of them would eventually be worth so much money. For anyone who might now know, these are die-cast cars, most commonly found in 1:64 scale that commonly could be bought for around a dollar. Anyone who grew up during the 70s probably had exposure to some of the coolest models ever made and never even realized it. Like I said, I loved collecting these things. There were larger scales introduced, but I always liked the 1:64 scale because that is what fit on the yellow Hot Wheels track I owned. I'd set up sloping runs and do time trials with a stopwatch to see which of my cars was the fastest. When my friends or young relatives got the idea in their heads that it might be fun to blow up cars with firecrackers, I immediately got my cars out of the mix. I took care of them and I actually still have a bunch of them, but I'm not selling. I must admit though, when I started doing research on how much people are willing to pay for some of these, especially the redline models, the thought of selling them did cross my mind since I've got some of those too.

So anyway, back to the Hot Wheels Lamborghini. If you are looking to buy these, you certainly must know that eBay should be on your short list of places to check. I'll show some listings below for you. (I'll also include Amazon listings beneath them for comparison).

If you are selling, and you happen to have a Hot Wheels Lamborghini just sitting around, you probably won't be getting rich from it, but you could do OK. The most expensive one sold recently was actually one of the smaller models. Part of the Treasure Hunt collection, the Lamborghini Countach was from 1996 and sold for just under $45. Not a bad return if you bought it at retail price. Among the larger models, the top seller was a 1:18 model. To give you an idea of just how focused these collectors are on what they want for their collections, here is what the actual auction said "Beautiful Cherry Red Hot Wheels 1:18/ Whips Black Lamborghini 310 Motoring. Never opened, remains untouched." That's it! I guess combined with the photo, it was enough to sell someone since it went for $42. Just think how much it might have brought if it had actually been promoted a bit.

One thing I've noticed lately, that I never realized before, is that you also find some of these harder to find items on Amazon. I really never expected that. You can find newer models if you want to buy with an eye to the future, or even the older, more valuable ones.

The Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii seem to be the two big dogs in the video game arena today. When I was a kid, I would start saving up money weeks or even months in advance if I knew there was a new video game release on the horizon. Of course the games were titles like Defender and Pac Man, but that was the best there was, so my friends and I were thrilled to get our hands on them and we played them until we grew callouses on our fingers. Now, gaming has gone to unbelievably more detailed and complex heights. Heck, I even saw someone referred to as a professional gamer (I think it was on Survivor). Considering how much better the games have become though, the prices now really aren't that bad in comparison to "back in the day.". Still, they aren't anything to sneeze at for most people.

One of the biggest and best systems going right now is Xbox 360. If you found this post, you probably already know the details. Some people think nothing of paying whatever the asking price is, but many buyers are on a tighter budget and want to look for better deals. The eBay market is already flooding with these units. My own experience of watching eBay near Christmas makes me think that the prices will top out soon and then drop as too many people go out and snatch them up just to list for resale at auction. I don't have an Xbox 360 yet. We have a Wii in my house, but I will be watching over the upcoming weeks for people listing at very low prices to get the attention of buyers. At some point, I believe someone is going to end up getting a great bargain price. I know that I'll be watching. If you are willing to be a little bit patient, you might want to keep an eye on things too. You might snag a nice deal for yourself.

What I'll be looking for ...

As more people list these, sellers will become tempted to drop their opening bid price to grab attention. Many of these people will be inexperienced sellers who don't take into account the fact that the time an item ends can play a big part in the final selling price. As a buyer, I'll be watching for items ending very late at night or in the middle of the day when many people are either sleeping or working and unable to check eBay to bid up the prices.

Also, right after Christmas, there will most likely be a flood of items for sale as people try to profit from duplicate gifts they received or panic as they ponder the prospect of being stuck with a lot of merchandise they bought before Christmas to resell. I can't promise that this will happen, but when Elmo was big a while back, this is pretty much what happened. Like I said, I'm not in a deperate hurry to get one of these, so I'm willing to watch and wait a bit. If you live in an area where it is tough to find popular items or where they just sell out too fast to get your hands on, then by all means, take a look at what is available on eBay now. That is one of the nice things about eBay...you can find just about anything at any time. Below, you will find a few of the game systems selling right now. Although the company has been around since 1945, Mattel really exploded in popularity when Barbie came along and gave the toy world a good shaking. She is probably the most collected of the vintage Mattel toys, but there are other Mattel products that did very well in their original run which are still much sought after today by toy collectors the world over.

If you are looking as a collector now, you will find that searching on vintage Mattel Toys on eBay will bring up a ton of Barbies. But she certainly is not the only vintage Mattel toy to put on your watch list. She seems to be the reigning queen of eBay vintage dolls. If she is in decent shape, you can pretty much count on spending a minimum amount in the low hundreds. The more rare the doll and the better the condition, the higher the price will go, often up and over the thousand dollar mark. (But you knew that).

If you are searching out what sells on eBay, old Mattel toys are a good place to look. They were right there testing out the best and latest technology that they could back in the "vintage" days. Having the income produced by selling Barbie surely gave them a little bit of money to invest in their research and development.

Recent Mattel items that sold well include a black Chatty Cathy doll that went for $500. Of course there were to top of the line Ponytail Barbies that went for prices topping $700. These are pretty rare to come across though if you are out hunting them on your own. Most of the time, anyone selling one of these vintage dolls has a pretty good idea that they are worth some good money, and if anything, they will want to charge an enormous amount of money to sell offline. From what I've seen, they look up the most expensive Barbie on eBay and then want to sell their items with a starting price somewhere in the neighborhood of what the top doll online sold for. Of course, that is usually a ridiculously high amount unless the doll's condition is utterly amazing. People do this on eBay sometimes too. Just look at how many dolls there are with zero bids that started out with opening prices of seven or eight hundred dollars. Those sellers scare bidders right away from their auctions.

Anyway, what are some good collectible vintage Mattel toys to look for? Well, here are a few things that seem to sell well for others...

Vintage Barbie (of course) as well as any of her friends and their accessories. DON'T forget the vintage Barbie clothing and accessories. They are like gold!

Mattel Chatty Cathy Dolls - The ones that sell best seem to have something distinguishing about them. The top seller was a black doll and number two was Canadian doll this week. With that said, Chatty Cathy does pretty well in general if she is in good shape. Just don't some outrageous amount for the doll if she is completely beat up. There are too many other nice ones out there to compete with and you could end up taking a beating on the purchase.

Vintage Mattel Hotwheels Redline Hotwheels are a great find. These have a red line on the tires. I remember having these when I was a kid in the 70s. I wish I had bought a ton of them and left them in the package. You can sometimes find these in boxes of toy cars at garage sales. Often dads give their old cars to their sons and they get all mixed together with more recent models. Hotwheels Redline cars are a very nice find.

Mattel Cap Guns - They made a bunch of these including the Shootin' Shell and Fanners. If you find any vintage cap guns at a decent price and in decent condition, grab them. They usually sell really well. If you have any stashed away in the attic, get them for goodness sake!

Cecil the Sea Serpent - Cecil is from the 60s show Beanie and Cecil. He is a sea serpent who shows up on eBay in Jack-in-the-box form

from time to time and also as a talking Mattel doll. He also could show up in other vintage toy forms. Learn what he looks like and keep your eyes open. He sells well if he is in decent shape.

Space 1999 Toys - Wow. I remember 1999 seeming like it was pretty far in the future. Anyway, these models are a nice find. If you see one at a garage sale, it is unlikely that they'll think it is worth over one hundred dollars. The Eagle 1 Spaceship set recently sold for over $130.

So there you go. That is a small sample to get you going if you are heading out to look for treasures. There are plenty more vintage Mattel toys that are worth your time, but the best thing for you to do is check out as many completed listings as possible and take good notes about what sells and what doesn't. Here is another item that seems to really do well on eBay. The Baby Einstein DVD Collection is a very popular seller. Kids love it and getting it moved along on eBay works out great for both sets of parents. It's a win/win situation. Whether you are buying or selling, second hand Baby Einstein DVDs are a great item.

If you have kids, you know that no matter what you might say before you have them, it can be nice to have them sit still and watch something once in a while. That isn't to say that you should ever use the TV as a babysitter, but it is nice to be able to actually sit down and eat a bowl of cereal without someone pulling at you or asking you to get something for five minutes.

I do have some experience with watching Baby Einsteins with my youngest child. I personally don't find them all that entertaining, but he does sometimes, and they do try to introduce a bit of education into the show. I'm all for the basic introduction to classical music too. It is a nice break from the Disney Channel stuff the other two prefer to watch!

Seriously, I think the videos are a great idea. It is important though to take the time to watch them with your kids and have some interaction with them. I'm not saying that because of the whole electronic babysitter thing. I'm saying it because kids grow up so fast, that you really shouldn't let yourself miss out on the fun of them being little.

If you are a seller, always consider picking up used dvds when you see them in collections. Usually you can get them for a decent price if you find them at a yard sale (they go VERY quickly by the way) and then put them up for sale on eBay. If you are looking to buy used dvds, well the same idea applies. Popular ones get grabbed up in a heartbeat at yardsales. You can still usually make out pretty well by getting them on eBay though. There usually is not a drop off in quality when you buy used dvds, but just to be sure, ask the seller about that and ask if they have a return policy. There are also a LOT of unopened Baby Einstein dvd collections that get listed on eBay. I'm guessing that they are duplicated gifts from birthday parties and holidays.

If you are looking for hot items in games and toys, Batman Legos look like a winner right now. Even though I already have tons of estate sale items, I look constantly for interesting auctions so I know what else to keep my eyes open for when I go out. Actually, I'm trying not to buy anything else at this point, but finding hot items is sort of a favorite thing that I enjoy doing. I've been watching these for a little while because I have an old Batman toy set from the early 90s that I've been a little bit lazy about listing due to all of the small parts that need packed.

If you are looking to purchase Batman Lego sets and individual figures, you can find some good deals on eBay, but I was surprised to see how many Batman items were available on Amazon. It is worth checking out.

Whether you are buying or selling, consider this an alert to you. My poking around led me down a path that ended with a search for "Batman Legos" and what I found was tons of action on the selling front for Legos toys. I found that just about any lego building system related to Batman is getting snapped up like crazy. If past trends hold true, I would imagine that these are going to just become more valuable and harder to find as we get closer to the holidays. If Batman Lego Sets are selling like hotcakes in August, look out as we approach November and December.

Personally, I try to avoid holiday rushes on items like this because it can be so hard to predict what will happen to prices. I'm a parent though, and I know that it can get pretty frustrating when your child wants that one certain toy and you can't seem to find it anywhere!

If you are a potential seller looking for hot items, these seem to be a definite winner. Toys and games can be very tough to predict until you see what actually starts to sell. These are selling very well and I was also able to find several reviews that seem to indicate that Lego has done a good job with these sets. I’ve always enjoyed Legos toys but I prefer to build “freestyle” structures.

If you are a general Lego or Batman Legos fan, you've got to check out this video I found on YouTube. It is outstanding and I can only imagine how much time was put into getting it to look so good!

There are also some very popular Batman video games from Lego. If you can find them, you're probably going to be able to turn them around in a hurry if you want to sell them. If you are looking to buy them, well, good luck and you might want to consider finding them online. Early.

The costs for these is running about the same right now as I'm checking, regardless of the game platform. The most popular versions listed are Playstation 3 and Will (as you might expect) but there are also plenty of listings for Playstation 2, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS.

The good news here is that even if you are having trouble finding these games for sale in retail outlets near you, the high competition between sellers on eBay right now should keep the games from reaching any outrageously high dollar amounts. Another bonus with listings of this sort is that there is often a good mix of new and used items available. Whichever you may choose, be absolutely sure that you check out the seller's return policy. eBay has been doing a good job of getting their sellers to make things very clear lately. If you still have any questions though, always ask!

Vintage Marbles|Antique Marbles|Marbles for Sale

I've got to admit that I never intentionally went out looking for marbles for sale. I remember playing with marbles a lot as a child. We never actually played the game of marbles, but just handling them, looking at the designs, and spinning them all around was pretty entertaining for me. I saw people playing marbles in older movies, as they sat around a circle drawn in the dirt, but no one ever actually taught me how to play.

While it is true that I have always focused on the "offbeat" items that qualify as collectibles, and it has been a constant learning experience, antique and vintage marbles were not something I actively looked for. Instead, they seemed to find me. Just about every time I've ended up with marbles to sell, I've found them inside of some larger container or in a box of mixed treasures that I bought as part of a larger lot.

The funny thing is that if you find the right antique marble, you could sell it to a collector for a pretty good profit. So, I find myself with these old marbles from time to time. I've been working on learning about them and they are actually pretty interesting once you start reading about them and looking closely at them. When I've sold them I've usually done it in lots because I just consider myself a novice in this collecting arena. I would imagine that there is a good chance that I gave away at least a few, that might have been worth something, for pennies on the dollar.

One of the reasons I am writing this blog is to not only help people find what they are looking for (hopefully something I'm currently selling) but also to help people who may be trying to use eBay as a way to get themselves through some tough times or maybe make some extra money. My knowledge of marbles is limited, but I can tell you that they are quite collectible, and if you find the right ones, they are also quite valuable. This is a video I came across showing off some beautifully handcrafted antique marbles.

Antique Glass Marbles

If you are new to collecting, you may want to check out this excellent glossary of marble terms. It really helped me out with my first listings. I may be a novice at marble collecting and selling, but I do know a little about transactions on eBay. If you are a relative newcomer to eBay or collecting marbles, ALWAYS take the time to check out the person doing the selling as well as the product they have listed. There are some people, like me, who do just come across a valuable marble once in a while. I personally, will always take at least four or five extreme close up photos of the marble and point out anything I see that might be an identifying mark or a flaw. Identifying marks might include seams or marks at the top and bottom that look like they might be from production. You should expect at least this much from a seller on eBay.

Also, always check their feedback. Optimally, you will deal with someone who is honest and straight forward about how they came to own the marble or marbles or someone who deals almost exclusively in them (best). Ask as many questions as you need to to get an understanding of what you are bidding on and always feel free to ask for more photos if you need to see them. No seller worth your time will give you a hard time about that.

In general, if the listing only offers blurry photos from far away, just keep moving on and don't waste your time. At best this is a careless seller who doesn't care what the product looks like. At worst, they blurred it intentionally and are trying to hide flaws. You don't want either of these scenarios.

Marbles are one of the collectibles that are just made for a venue like eBay. People from around the world can buy and sell to build their collections to just how they want them to be. Most people you deal with will be honest, decent folks. I can count on one hand the number of disappointing transactions I had out of thousands. You must beware and alert though because in the end it will be you choosing to bid or not to bid on that rare antique marble. Good luck!

Cartoon Glasses

Now that I've got kids of my own, I find myself spoiling them a little. When they want a ball at the store, I usually buy it. If there is some fabulous prize at McDonald's (yeah, right!) we usually end up with it. One of the things I wanted growing up, that I could never get my hands on, were cartoon glasses. You know the kind. They were drinking glasses given away at different restaurants when you made some pre-set purchase. They had images of favorite cartoon characters on the outside, and to a kid, they were pretty attractive.

The funny thing is, for all of my begging for them back then, I had no intention of preserving them as collectibles. I just wanted the cool glasses with Bugs Bunny and friends plastered on the outside. It turns out that now they are pretty darn collectible. I have since found articles about them that actually say that the ones I wanted are some of the most collected today. The 1974 Pepsi glasses were what I really wanted!

From what I've observed, mostly from the selling end, Pepsi cartoon glasses are some of the most coveted promotional glasses going. I suppose that makes sense since they featured extremely popular characters like the Tasmanian Devil, Bugs Bunny, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck...The list goes on and on, but when little kids saw them, they wanted them, A LOT. I should mention that it wasn't only Looney Tunes characters that were really popular. Less well known characters like Underdog and his buddies showed up too.

Many times, people assume that the only way to get their hands on these glasses is to either scour garage sales and flea markets or head straight to eBay. eBay is probably the place where you will find the most old cartoon glasses listed for sale, but I have been finding more and more of them showing up on Amazon. Although the selection is much smaller, the advantage of looking for vintage glasses on Amazon is that there is much less competition and the price is fixed (usually at a lower price than eBay). If you collect, it is worth checking out.

I find old Peanuts glasses a lot as I go from sale to sale. I mostly find them at flea markets run by churches. That seems to be where people unload a lot of old stuff they meant to collect at one time. If you are a collector, you might want to check out some of those sales. The only problem is that you really never know what you will find. Most times, if you are looking for something specific, you don't find it. Part of the reason that I have so much collectible stuff around here is that I pretty much bought everything anyone could ever want to collect! That in addition to some purchases of bulk estate stuff fills the house in a hurry. Sorry, I went majorly off topic there for a minute. The Peanuts glasses I have around here (and will be listing) are mostly from 1965. That's a little before my time, but they must have sold a ton of them. I've got shelves full.

I was looking around for an interesting video to put here that showed some promotional glasses being sold. I found the following video that I liked even more. This is a 1970s McDonald's commercial that will probably make some younger people do a double take it is so different from what you see today. If you look closely at this commercial, you'll see some faces you have probably seen before from TV shows.

You know, it is unbelievable the amount of "stuff" I managed to buy over the past few years of hitting estate sales, yard sales and garage sales. One thing I just could not walk away from was a good old Atari or Nintendo NES. I would buy retro video games almost any time I found them. I actually lost track of how many vintage video games I purchased. When I started cleaning out the garage and game room, I was a bit embarrassed as the pile of vintage games and vintage video game systems continued to grow and grow.

Vintage Video Games

I have found pretty much every major system produced since the 1970s. You can't see it them all in thish shot, but this lot includes several NES systems, Sega Saturn Systems, Atari 2600 systems, Super Nintendos, Genesis Systems, Gameboys, Intellivision sytems, Pong....You get the point. Of course I also bought hundreds of games to go with this huge lot of video fun! Picture so much stuff in storage that this could actually hide. That is how much stuff I purchased over time.

I also acquired an enormous amount of controllers, power supplies, instructions, specialized joysticks and on and on. I really intended on selling these individually, but they I just couldn't take not being able to turn around any more!

I did a little digging around and found an old commercial from 1978 for the Atari 2600 game console. It features Pete Rose and Don Knotts. One of the lines in it is an umpire telling Rose "Yer outta here!". Do you think they knew something?

I started collecting these not only to sell on eBay but because I really loved playing these games when I was growing up. I guess my friends and I were the first video game generation. We started out by playing Pong and each new innovation in video game technology got us to update our Christmas and birthday lists. Back then, each old system would kind of get pushed aside as the games became better and better.

Now we have a Wii in my house and although I think its pretty neat, I still prefer the games where you use one simple controller to do some basic action. As old as it is, I think the original Mario Brothers game is still one of my all time favorites and when I hooked up one of these NES consoles to test it with Mario, I couldn't stop myself even though it had been several years since I had last played. Yep, for us video veterans, there is something special about vintage video games.

I spent countless hours sitting on the floor of the game room memorizing the patterns followed by those pesky Space Invaders. I can still remember comparing thumb callouses with friends. We developed them from days of devoted manipulation of the video joystick. Funny how that one stick with a red button next to it could manage to entertain us. Compared to what is available on some controllers today, those old sticks were real dinosaurs.

I think the biggest of the early releases that I can remember was Missile Command. That was one of the cartridges that everyone was saving up to buy. I believe it went for somewhere in the neighborhood of forty bucks. That was a pretty rich neighborhood back then, so handing over that much cash came with some pretty high expectations from the game. It was pretty good, but not having a trackball left us a bit disappointed. It was a nice leap in graphics quality though, so we were still pretty happy.

Another thing that happened during those early years was the introduction of Activision games. The graphics on those were much better than what we were used to playing with on our TVs. They were still very weak compared to what is available now, but Pitfall was a great game. It was sort of based on the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie I believe. It was a bit tougher to beat than the earlier games from Atari (at least it was for me).
